Dying, playing and we are in the middle of August!

Since rust-dying last month, this month I’ve tried dying with natural pigments, cochenille, madder, catechu, bluewood, yellowwood and turmenic.

Here just out of the dye bath and
after it was washed and ironed the colours ended like this: cotton
and silk (mostly)

The bright yellow is turmenic. I had hoped for brighter colours, but not this time. My problem is that I am not good at following precise recipies, I like a more random approach!

Last week I met with some friends for a little workshop, laminating. This is my result:

We had plans for an extra treat, crackeling with flour paste, but time ran out. So I tried it yesterday.
It was a lovely day, so I could dry it in the sun, first the paste
then fabric paint, and at last finished on the washing line:

Last I want to show you my quilts for the Calender with Texnet2, August:

«Between green and blue», 15×15 cm cotton, and
«The reconciliation of the wind in the forest», monoprint using leaves from the garden, 15×32 cm.

Thanks for reading, I hope you have enjoyed this.

Nadelwelt next!

Our Textile Calender will be exhibited at Nadelwelt 20.-22. March. My contribution for the month May are:

«Why?» 32×32 cm.

Why do we see something and cannot forget it. Every May the Sakura will blossom amongst the beech hedges in Byparken in Bergen, and every year I would take a moment, admire and take pictures on my way to work.

And:

«The Boat lies so Quiet» 15×15 cm.

The boat lies so quiet on the calm sea.

Next time The Calender will be exhibited is at the Biennale International d’art textile en Beaujolais in France in June.

Hope you enjoyed this.

Spring is here!

It is finally spring although it was snowing yesterday. Luckilly it melted as soon as it fell down. But there is still frost in the ground, the crocuses gives me hope for warmer weather though. These two white beauties surprises me every year.

And these purple with the saffron stamen:

I say no more…

May is approaching and the Calender will be exhibited again. My quilts for the Calender of April are:

The boat is so quiet

Proud in its silence

These words make me think about the Viking grave-mounds and their contet.

And my second entry:

About the wind and colours of spring!

Easter is here, hopefully it will get warmer and soon my garden will be filled with colours like this, giving me new inspiration!

The Calender is going to be exhibited at Nadelwelt, Karlsruhe in Germany, in May and at the Biennale International d’art textile en Beaujolais in France in June.

Until next time….

Yellow Tulips

Yellow Tulips

We have just revealed our new challenge on Latitudequilts, and this is my contribution. Our challenge this time is Art Deco.

Tulips are such elegant flowers, simple in shapes and in so many
wonderful colours. And since Art Deco is very simplified, it was a
perfect match for my personal challenge, tulips. Looking through images
from my garden, I settled on the one I used in an earlier challenge,
LOVE, and used it as a template for raw edge applique, with hand dyed
cotton.
As a background, I used something that reminded me of
radioes from the 1930s, freehand cut and pieced commersial fabrics, on
top of pale green linen.

The quilting in the background is simply straight lines, the tulips are free hand machinequilted, with French knots.
I am also working on my last textile book with  Ineke Berlyn, I’ll show you as soon as it is finished.

My scroll is finished

My scroll is finished

I promished to show you my scroll-book when it was finished, and here it is:
It is based on my fascination for Medieval Norway, and the king you see at the start of the scroll, Magnus VI Haakonsson, king of Norway 1263-1280. Among other things, he buildt the two structures you can get a glimpse of, in Bergen and Tunsberg. But most of all he collected the different laws in Norway into one, «Landsloven av 1274», parts of which exists in our present legislation.
This is the left part of the scroll:
and the right:
another close up
I have also finished another textile book for Ineke Berlyn, which I will show you next time.
Thank you for watching.

Book 3 with Ineke

I have just finished my book 3 in Ineke Berlyn’s Art Textile Books. I used the circle as inspiration, it has 36 pages, rusted and bleached fabrics, cotton and linen, and mostly hand-quilted/embroidered. Here are pictures of some of the pages:

Fabric dying

Fabric dying

January has been filled with fabric dying. I signed in on Elizabeth Bartons’s Basic Dying for Quiltmakers. It had been a while since I last hand-dyed fabris, so I just thought to get a repetition. Well here are the result. First several graditions:

Then the colour-circle:

 Then some neutrals:

And, since green is one part of my next challenge for Latitude quilts, I made a gradiation using Sage-green, and put some lace and scrims in as well:

Then, we got a lot of snow last week, and I decided to do some snow dying. I could not get the colours as bright as they are,

And, also here, I put in some lace and scrim:

Thanks for reading.

My first scroll-book

My first scroll-book

This year, I’ve decided to participate in Ineke Berlyn’s Art Textile books online. I like her workshops, I’ve learnt so much from them. So I have just finished my first scroll-book.

It is made of bits and pieces from my stash, sewn mostly with silk embrodery thread and embellished with lace and beads.
The outside is from my first ever try of dying in plastic bags, overdyed later with indigo, stencilled and thermofax printed:

And the inside is a mixture of hand dyed and comercial fabric scraps, and some of them were also stencilled and printed:

then I put on some old bits of lace:

 and plenty of beads

Thanks for visiting.

Welcome

I love to make things. I like knitting in the evenings, and tending my garden. I love to work with fibres, to colour and shape things. I find great inspiration in older Japanese design, the art of Hiroshige and Hokusai being my favourites. I also dabble a bit with bookmaking, binding my own sketchbooks to play in and fill with my research, as well as making textile books.
