Finished at last

A little more than a year ago, I signed up for DesignMatters Creative Quiltmaking course. About a week ago I finnished, and now I have City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Creative Techniques – Textiles. My last quilt was an appliqué I called «Leidangen». It is inspired by our Viking boats Oseberg and Gokstad.

The shape is from Oseberg, but the colours I got from the Gokstad ship, which is supposed to have been black, with black and yellow shields. I needle turned and hand quilted the main boat, the rest is either bonded appliqué or stencilled on, and machine quilted.
On the top I quilted some Runes,

and on the bottom I quilted a «Leidang» which means «fleet of conscripted warships».  These are from a carving found when they excavated the Medieval Bryggen  here in Bergen, after the great fire in 1955.

Well, it has been a very busy year, and just now, I feel a bit empty. Christmas is approaching and now I will concentrate on that. And after Christmas, I have a deadline for the Norsk Quilteforbund’s annual competition, on February 1st.

Look what I’ve got

My brother and his wife are moving, and they gave me this spinning wheel. I have to put it together, but I have all the part so it should not be a problem. It has been my grandmother’s.

They also brought a card box full of leather, oxen and reindeer.
My youngest daughter got wild when she saw all the leater, wanted some for book-covers. Just like me, she loves books, of all kind. Like this one I made nearly some years ago.

This and that

Please forgive me, I know it’s been long since last entry. Since then we have had another meeting in my tablet-weaving-group. This time we focused on Egyptian Diagonal, easy and difficult at the same time. You really has to stay focused on the turning of the tablets. And if you change the direction on some of the tablets, the result can be like this:

At last the summer has arrived to Bergen, so yesterday, I had chance to do some Indigo-dying. Here is the vat ready for use:

silk, linen, cotton and some thread ready to be put in:

And here are the result, sprerad all over my garden. I was prepared to have blue grass afterwords, but it is still green. Lucky me…

Busy days of May

Busy days of May

Well, at last I’m posting something… This spring has been extremely busy for me. At the end of March I got my second grandchild, a lovely girl named Sigrid, and I went to my daughter to help a bit in these first weeks. Also I have the Creative Quilting Course I’m taking, and my job.. So I have not had much time left for this kind of computerwork.
But I have been able to squeeze in a bit of Tablet Weaving. Together with some ladies here in Bergen, we are exploring the world of Tablet Weaving, trying out different patterns and techniques. Last time, I started this ribbon, in wool:

Hopefully, I will have time to finish to our next meeting in the end of May
Christmas is here!

Christmas is here!

I just have to face it! Christmas is here, even if I wish I had some extra days to get ready… As always. After weeks of frost, we got snow a week ago. And yesterday it started again. Now we have about 12 cm, and more is comming.. We’ll have a white Christmas this year. (The picture above was taken earlier in December).
But hopefully the temperature now will be acceptable so that my Helleborus can stay outdoor where it is supposed to be.
This December has been very busy for me, as usual ! And on top of it all, I started with the course in Creative Quiltmaking at Design Matters. So I have no problem filling my days, rather wished I had more days… If you want to see, here are two of the pages from my sketchbook, in this first one I used Markal Paintstiks. And in this last one, I sprayed on using stencils:

I wish you all a
 Peaceful Christmas
and a
 Happy New Year

Card-weaving 2

I promised you a look at the band I started in Masfjorden, and here it is.

A little bit dark perhaps, it was late night when I took the photograph. And I only have my cell phone, because I’ve left my camera at my daughters house in Tønsberg. I’m really looking forvard to get it back, because although the camera in my cell phone has 5 megapixels, it is not good in close-ups. I really miss the macro-function on my old digital camera.

Card weaving

This summer I had 5 lovely days in a tiny place a little north of Bergen called Masfjorden, with a group of women dedicated to Card Weaving. And we had a wonderful teacher in the swedish artist Sonja Berlin. She tried to teach us as much as possible in the art of card weaving, and was a great inspiration. So, when I came home I had to try what I’d learned, picked some linen in green and red and made myself a ribbon for Christmas:
This is so fun, and I’m about to finish another band I started in Masfjorden. It is in thin mercerised cotton, I’ll se if I can get a picture of it.
These last few days we’ve had a lovely autumn weather, and the garden has started to change colour. Just look at the beautiful colours this Hosta has got:
I just hope we can have this weather a little longer before it start to rain again. Although I need inspiration for my Sketchbook Project 2011, since my theme is  – RAIN…

Finished sample

Earlier this year, I dyed some fabrics and embrodery thread. One of these pieces, I made a little sample of, also using Shiva Paintsticks to stencill on some flowers. Then I quilted the piece, and finished with a lot of french knots. My embrodery-thread was in the same dye-bath as the fabric. I decided to try a softer batting, and that was a disaster. Almost impossible to freehandquilt. But it ended as a nice little quilt though, ever with the uneven quilting. And at last I managed to get a picture of it.

Here are a close up of the flowers:

The sketchbook project 2011

Even though I have plenty to fill my limited time with, I’ve signed up for The Sketchbook Project 2011, an exiting idea from the Art House Co-op and the Brooklyn Library. I had a hard time choosing a theme, so I let the Project do it for me. And, living in a city with around 256 rainy days a year, I find it amusing to get the theme: A record year of rainfall! My plan just now is to explore all the grey hues of rainy weather. I haven’t got my moleskin notebook yet, guess it will take a few weeks to reach me across the ocean. I will try to show images of my sketchbook here in my blog.
If you too are interested, you can read more about it here:

Summertime and morning-guest in our back-yard

Summertime and morning-guest in our back-yard

At last, we have summer. May and June have been rather cold. My plants don’t mind, they are used to it, but I would prefer it to be a little warmer. But the last two days, have been wonderful with temperature around 19 degrees. Yesterday we woke up finding a guest in our back yard. A young red dear was grazing and not minding us as long as we stayed indoors:

And just now my favorite flower is at its best. This Meconopsis betonicifolia I’ve raised from seed, and every year in May-June, it shines with its incredible blue colour.

Welcome

I love to make things. I like knitting in the evenings, and tending my garden. I love to work with fibres, to colour and shape things. I find great inspiration in older Japanese design, the art of Hiroshige and Hokusai being my favourites. I also dabble a bit with bookmaking, binding my own sketchbooks to play in and fill with my research, as well as making textile books.
